Alarming Stories

Tales of an apprentice intruder alarm engineer

Alarming Stories details my time as an apprentice. During my apprenticeship, I encountered numerous captivating situations that shed light on the early days of intruder alarm systems, which surprisingly operated in a rather crude manner. These tales offer a glimpse into the amusing, risky, and sometimes perilous experiences I faced during my formative years.

The writings of a renowned Yorkshire vet, published in 1970 and televised in 1978, profoundly influenced me throughout my life. As I drove across Yorkshire to install, maintain, and repair security systems, I felt a kinship with him. I frequently found myself visiting remote locations all over Yorkshire, braving all kinds of weather conditions, to promptly address customer emergencies.

Often, I pondered the possibility of documenting my own unique adventures within the intruder alarm industry. The unrestrained access I had to customers' premises during my career led to countless amusing, dangerous, humorous, and even sensual encounters rarely granted to others.

"Tales of an Apprentice Intruder Alarm Engineer" serves as the first installment in my book series, chronicling my experiences from 1976 to 1980.

Alarming Stories II

Tales of a security engineer

After completing my education in 1976, I eagerly sought an apprenticeship with all four major intruder alarm companies in the UK. To my delight, I received a positive response from Chubb Alarms, which led to an interview and ultimately a job offer.

From 1976 to 1980, I served as an apprentice at Chubb, and this period is vividly captured in my debut book, "Alarming Stories: Tales of an Apprentice Intruder Alarm Engineer." Following my qualification as an engineer, I enjoyed privileged access to customers' premises, where I installed and repaired intruder alarm and CCTV systems.

In 1981, I transitioned to Modern Alarms and subsequently joined CamEra in 1982 until their unfortunate demise in 1984. Later, I found employment at Security Centres until Modern Alarms acquired the company. Eventually, I ventured into self-employment.

Throughout my time as a security engineer, I witnessed a plethora of captivating situations. The forthcoming tales provide a glimpse into the intriguing landscape of the early 1980s security industry, encompassing humorous, risky, and occasionally perilous encounters I experienced in the early stages of my career.

While most stories were witnessed firsthand, a few were shared with me in great detail by fellow engineers. To protect their identities, I have taken care to conceal their names. However, I suspect many will recognize themselves when reading the book. I believe that enough time has passed to ensure that the details I've provided about these early security systems do not compromise the current security of customers or the installing companies in present times.

"Tales of a Security Engineer" serves as the second volume in my book series, chronicling my experiences from 1980 to 1986.
